INTRODUCTION

This document is a summary of the methods I use in coaching the throws events and is intended as a personal document to be shared with my athletes and fellow throws coaches at Derby. It is not intended for publication.

This document is produced as a reference document for coaching athletes at all levels in the throws. For practical reasons, some of the programmes outlined in this document will be changed depending on the needs of the athletes or due to changes in the coaching environment. Updates will be made as ideas are modified or on the light of new training and coaching practices. It is totally based on my conception of best practice for technique and conditioning evolved over about 30 years of coaching and competing.

Over many years of coaching, input has been received from a variety of quarters regarding throws coaching. Some inputs have been taken from articles in the “Thrower” magazine, articles on the internet and some selected input from courses given by Wilf Paish, John Trower and Gil Stevenson, but primarily is based on the author’s experience.

The periodised year outlined in this document is for guidance only since much depends on the circumstances of the athlete, such as being at university etc.

Generally, a sub-set of the exercises is used for conditioning and will depend on the time of year and the individual athletes needs. Generally, time available for coaching and training are the limiting features.
